Although it has certainly had a chequered past, Derry (or Londonderry) has undergone somewhat of a transformation in recent years and has emerged as a city worthy of the increasing number of tourists that are visiting its sights. There has been a settlement at Derry on the River Foyle for over a thousand years and the walls that were built to surround the city in the seventeenth century still remain. Derry has a number of great architectural features including St Eugene's Cathedral, St Columb's Cathedral, St Augustine's Chapel and the Guildhall. For those interested in the separatist history of the town, a visit to the Free Derry Corner and the Bogside People's Gallery is a must.
Derry is serviced by the City of Derry Airport (Aerofort Chathair Dhoire) which is located several kilometres to the east of Derry off of the A2 Clooney Road. The airport was originally used as an RAF base and has two runways in use, with further redevelopments planned. The airport is not large but is experiencing a marked increase in passenger numbers (around half a million annually), and several major airlines fly into the complex including Ryan Air, British Airways and FlyBe. Car hire is recommended for exploring the wider Derry area (Ballycastle, Omagh and Coleraine are close by); the car hire facilities are located right outside of the airport terminal and include operators Hertz, Avis, Kings Car Hire, Budget and Ford. Derry can be very cold in the winter months, with average minimum temperatures hovering at freezing, so it is recommended that you hire a car equipped with heating for the duration of your stay.
